When you think of the Gard, you think at first of the Romans. Nîmes, the second town of Languedoc- Roussillon, has many remains of that period, with the arenas, the Maison Carrée (square house), Tour Magne and of course the famous Pont du Gard (photo) with its three levels of arches.

The Gard is a region with contrasts. In the Western part you'll find the hills of the Cévennes, in the Eastern part there is the  Rhône river and in the South the marshes of the "Petite Camarque" extend to the horizon.

The constrasts concern as well the economics, with lots of industry in the region of Alès, the nuclear centre of Marcoule, and agriculture blessed with sun and irrigation. And the Gard forms one of the ancient bastions of the protestantism.
